Plan your dream job while doing MS.

Blog3

Initially, plenty of research needs to be done. The earlier you start is better. Choose the right type of employment that will suit your profile. Look out for a firm that has a creditworthiness. Moreover, a company that appreciates your efforts with incentives and other perks. Look at the past records of the achievements made by it in its field of specialization. It does not matter how smart you are? Put into action your critical reasoning skills. You will see great success where others have failed.

Propel yourself forward for a dream job accelerating your soft-skills, communication, self-confidence, the willingness to adapt to unexpected situations. A major percentage of success lies in technical skills. Try to reach out and get in touch with your friends, peers, and seniors. Moreover, add more weight to your core value. Create a LinkedIn profile. Make the best use of social media. Underline this. Map a promising track so as to get a job as soon as you complete your MS.

Establish your own blog. Increase your presence on WordPress. It is the best site to develop a personal blog. Buy your own domain name through a GoDaddy.com. Install on the site you created. Pick a hobby and keep writing about it.

Brand names open several doors. Grab an internship at Reebok. It is a company that has wide recognition. Its global presence is huge. The reality maybe you never did anything there. But, the Reebok name on your profile will help you in landing a big job.

Get the help from a mentor. Most successful people are the example. You will get the best guidance to decide on your dream job after completion of MS. A mentor can change everything in you. The career office in your college is another place to explore or look for new opportunity. The alumni database has a vast list of contacts with email Ids and phone numbers. Register there and take advantage of the help you get from them. A mentor is a person who helps you in shaping your destiny while doing MS. The following strategies are applied to make you achieve success.

  1. Master your mind
  2. Follow your purpose
  3. Practice presentation
  4. Live with discipline
  5. Respect time
  6. Be selfless in thinking
  7. Embrace present trends

These tips will make you get a job beyond your expectations. The quality of your job depends on the quality of your preparation. You are competing against a large pool of MS graduates. Remember, you will be up against a large crowd. Your experience will be very limited. You are similar to a fresh job seeker.

Set your goals clearly. Discover the job, which gives fulfillment. Define your vision clearly, then act on it. Moreover, you can enroll with a professional job providing group. They will put forward your resume for industry specific jobs. A career related to your MS graduation. The specialization that you are qualified in. The area in which you are interested to work. The location and environment you wish to get employed. This is a great way to form connections. So also develop a relationship that is likely to be helpful as time passes by.

The training you receive under a mentor opens several opportunities for personal growth. The main idea is to get a secure place where you will excel with creative plans and gain quick promotions. You must present new designs, successful formulas and much more. So it is better you look at each situation and then decide on formulating an action plan for fruitful productivity. Thereafter, you have good chances of getting a good offer from big industries. This is one question that every student must have in their mind. From the beginning, you must become obsessed with the big American dream.

The university from where you graduated offers better chances than you already have. It is the basis for a good job placement in a firm of global repute. You need to maintain high standards in order to have an edge over the other job contenders with more experience. You must have invested a big amount in doing MS. Therefore, you certainly need to look for the best options. A high paying salary, a pleasant work environment, and friendly colleagues. A company where you are an asset.

11 Reasons – Why do Students need a Consultant for MBA and MS admissions?

Manhattan Review India

In today’s highly competitive world it is of prime importance that one should get professional help to stay ahead of the pack. Professional admission consultants are immensely significant in this regard as they know lot of strategies which helps students in maximizing their chances so that they do not lose out.

Our point is – If you do not take professional help, there is a high chance that your competitors (other students) are doing so to gain advantage over you.

Read on to know how professional admission consultants can help you outshine others.

  1. The Insider’s Edge

It is always good to have somebody who knows what it takes to get into the elite B-Schools and top universities. A second professional opinion always helps. They know the ways through which you can brighten your chances of earning an interview call. Our point is, if help is available, why not take it. Getting a bit of advice from friend or two provides very limited and probably obsolete information.

  1. Short on time

Almost everybody has lot of multiple roles to play in our daily lives. Therefore it is only a matter of time, when students should seek professional help to manage the entire admission schedule.

  1. First Timers need it, Second timers need it even more

Now, if you are applying for the first time, an admission consultant helps you in getting your dream college, making your life easy in the process. They help you save time on online research. Admission consultants become even more significant, especially when students are applying for second or third time as you do not want to commit the same mistake again.

  1. If your weakness column is heavier

If you feel that there are a lot of areas where you are weak and need professional help, then without wasting any time you should consult an admission consultant to iron out the flaws. Better to act before it is too late.

  1. Even great players need coaches

We have handled several students in the past who were brilliant in academics, had an excellent percentage, a high GMAT/GRE score. However they got rejected because the other important parts of the application forms were not covered properly and after they came to us. So professional advice always helps.

  1. Extensive research about schools

You might have zeroed in a good school but it may happen that your particular choice of subject is being taught better in some other good school. Let a professional help you in getting it right for you. You need to cross the line within a stipulated time and time flies too soon.

  1. Professional approach

Professional consultants have good amount of experience behind them, so you can seek advice for maximization of your chances. Take advantage of free assessment tests, whenever you get it.

  1. Training for VISA Interview

All of us are aware how difficult it is to clear the VISA interview. And especially with norms being stricter it is always advisable to have some training under your belt before the show down. A must for those who have never faced any VISA interview in their lives or have been repeatedly rejected.

  1. Admission consultants are a good alternative to Admission Officers

During the entire process, you will have lot of questions but you cannot expect the admission officer to answer all of them. Admission consultants know a great deal about schools and since they charge you some money, therefore they will be more than ready to solve any of your queries and you know help is nearby, whenever you need.

  1. Post Sales Service

Some of the admission consultants like Manhattan Review even offer after admission services like Pre-departure orientation, Foreign Exchange and Travel assistance, different Dos and Don’ts checklists etc. It is a great value addition especially for those who are first timers in the US academic world.

  1. Finally, the most important reason

You should be committed for the entire process – right from free counseling, test preparation to pre-departure orientation. This will optimize your whole experience and benefit you from the total services offered by companies like Manhattan Review.  Then only would you be taking advantage of the experience, expertise and the large network of Manhattan Review.

What next, apart from USA?

What next, apart from USA-

Indian (even other international) students are very worried about the situation in USA, where the proposed legislations might affect their ‘employability’ chances and the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience in addition to the possibility of making a career/life in USA.

As far as education is concerned, there are absolutely no restrictions to study in USA – in good universities and programs. However, it is always best to plan for self-funding for the first semester (tuition and living) rather than looking for part-time jobs and other funding opportunities. It is expected (by the US government) that those who plan to study in USA, must be self-sufficient financially and should not depend upon jobs and doles. This trend will help students to get entry into USA if they show adequate proof of funds for their education.

Coming to employment after education (OPT), a major concern is about the proposal to restrict the same (OPT) to one year, instead of three years (for STEM program students) This effectively means that students can stay back for 12 months after their education, instead of 36 months. Please note however, that this is only a proposal and has not been made a law yet.

So, what are the options for Indian students who wish to avoid USA and look for other countries?

Canada is one country which is safer, equally good (for education), cheaper and more stable politically. Importantly, almost all programs/courses are available as in the US universities.

The biggest advantage for students is that they can stay back for THREE years in Canada, after their education, with a post-graduation work permit. This will help students to not only gain work experience but also use it for permanent residence (PR).

Obviously, Canada will be the best bet for education and settlement, as an alternative to USA.

Germany permits extension of visas to students for a period of one and half years (1.5 years) after their education. Students will have unrestricted access for employment, during this 1.5 year period.  While there is limited possibility to settle down in Germany after education and employment, the world-class education, coupled with rich work experience will provide students with opportunities world-wide for better prospects.

All said and done, USA is always the best destination in terms of education, flexibility, jobs, full-time employment opportunities and settlement. Moreover, with Trump’s proposal to offer ‘merit-based immigration’ to people who want to settle in USA (like Canada and Australia), USA becomes all the more attractive, notwithstanding the stray incidents that are troubling Indians.

So, choose your country carefully with your long-term goals in view. Manhattan Review (MR) will be pleased to provide you with more information and help you make a proper decision on your plans of studying abroad.  Meet our counselors at a center nearest to you.

How to make effective essays for MBA admission

How to make effective essays for MBA admission

It is widely accepted that writing essays can be challenging. The admission officers go through thousands of profiles, and read, thousands of essays. It is obvious that, most essays will have a great deal of similarity. So, you must strive hard, to make your essays sound different, and more compelling.

How do I make my essay look different and better than others? To make your essays look different, you have to brainstorm continuously, and focus on your all round aspects. Focusing on your personal aspects, will greatly help in adding value to your essays. As mentioned before, you cannot afford to take your essays lightly, as they are mandatory and carry a specific weight to your application.

A question might be at the back of your mind – A lot of students have a similar GPA and GMAT SCORES. So what makes the difference? It is your essay that makes the difference

Your essays can be a medium through which, you can highlight your key skills, your attributes, personal qualities, and unique traits. The admission officers need a specific set of skills, and a specific kind of candidate, to fill in their class. Remember, it is your responsibility to convince them, that you are the one they are looking for. What kind of essays will I be asked to write?

You will be asked to write an essay on your real life experiences.

Let us consider an example.

Suppose, you have coached an under-14 football team. Now, you want to share your experiences, by writing a compelling essay, based on the above situation.

Why do a lot of essays get rejected? Remember – It is more about how you write rather than what you write?

While writing an essay, you must ensure that it should be written in a proper sequence. You can summarize your essay, by breaking it into parts or paragraphs. You must jot down the key points, before writing down the entire story.

In the first paragraph, you should give a convincing introduction to the challenges faced by the team. For example- you can say, initially, the parents did not allow their children to play football, as the kids were not disciplined. The kids did not arrive in time and lacked the team spirit.

In the second paragraph, you can mention, the preventive actions taken by you. For example, like-  explaining the parents about the importance of sports, encouraging the students to work as a team, or conducting ice breaking sessions, that allowed free mixing, and promoted friendship between the kids.

In the third paragraph, you can talk about the motivational actions taken to resolve these problems. For example, like- encouraging children to arrive in time by rewarding them for their discipline. You can also say- team work was a problem, so I encouraged my students to pass the ball frequently, and after the session was over, I used to reward those kids, who frequently passed the ball. This improved the teamwork skills.

In the fourth paragraph, you can talk about the results- whether they were fruitful or they backfired. You can say, after I took the preventive measures and motivational actions, the team was more disciplined, and started winning more matches. So mention things like we competed with great spirits, and finally won the all-important trophy.

In the fifth paragraph, you can mention the “takeaways”, or the outcome of your efforts. You can say, after the team won, the team spirit was at its peak. The parents congratulated, and thanked me for my efforts. The kids were thrilled, and I got immense respect. We managed to pull off something, which seemed impossible a few months back. That gave me immense joy and satisfaction, as my hard work paid off.

Now from the above example, it is evident that, the essays should be structured, and written in a proper sequence. You have to back your points with relevant examples. An essay which is narrated with the help of real life examples, adds authenticity to your application, and plays a big role in differentiating your profile from other applicants.

At Manhattan Review (MR), we have experts who have studied and worked abroad and are experts in editing your essays for MBA, MS and Bachelor’s programs. Computer Science or Information Technology?

Computer Science or Information Technology?

Untitled design (24)

This is a million dollar question for many students who wish to pursue higher education abroad, in any of these streams/specializations.

The main reason for the confusion especially for Indian students is the fact that here, universities offer different fields of study such as – Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering etc. Each of these specializations have similar subjects/courses of study except for a few electives in order to ‘specialize’ and graduate.  As a result, many, many students are really confused to choose a particular field of study – Computer Science or Information Technology or Software Engineering et al.

How to break this logjam? Obviously, the first question one should answer oneself is whether to become a programmer or a solution provider for problems with current technology.

Computer science students are mostly taught programming and hence they become Software Programmers, Software Engineers, Project Managers, Application Developers, Cloud Technology related fields, Software Testers etc.

Whereas, IT students are taught to become Web developers & designers, Data Security Officers, Data Managers, Software Developers and IT Engineers.

The topics mostly taught in the IT stream are Database Management Systems, Operating Systems, Basic and Advanced Computer Networks, Software Engineering, Computer Architecture and design, Data Structures, Internet tools, Information Security, Object Oriented Design, and Data Warehousing etc. Advanced courses include Artificial Intelligence, Mobile Computing, Human Computer Interaction, Distributed Systems etc.

As already mentioned earlier, both CS and IT graduates are taught most of the subjects in common. However, in the United States (and in Canada also), the subjects taught under IT are offered as specializations under the Department of Computer Science and vice versa!

So, how do you choose the ‘right’ specialization at the Master’s level? It should not be based on what you have studied at the Bachelor’s level, but on what you would like to study at the Master’s level!!

For example, you might have done a B.Tech in IT, but have work experience of about 2 years in Big Data. You want to gain further knowledge in the same field (Big Data) for your growth. Which field should you choose? Some universities offer ‘Big Data’ under the Department of Computer Science and some others, under the Department of Business/IT, under the specialization of ‘Management Information Systems’. These keep changing from one university to another.

Therefore, the BEST WAY is to decide on your future field of work and look for education (at the Master’s level) that help you reach that goal. If you want to be a programmer, go for CS. If you want to be hardware specialist, go for Computer Engineering. If you want to be a solution specialist, go for IT, etc.

Make a proper choice at the time of starting your applications to universities. Once you join a wrong program, you would waste time on unrelated subjects and money on transferring to another field of study.

This is where, the expertise of Manhattan Review comes useful. We will counsel you to choose the right program and guide you with the selection of universities, admission process, applying, follow up, documentation and finally the visa process. In other words, right from A to Z of your plans of studying abroad.

Contact our counselors or center managers nearest to you and you will make BETTER CHOICES for your academics and ultimately LIFE!

Want to fly to USA?

want-to-fly-to-usa

ACICS (Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools) is one of the accrediting bodies in USA, that accredits (similar to recognition) certain programs and colleges/universities in USA. Just a few days back, the US Dept. of Education has withdrawn the recognition of accreditation powers to ACICS.

Due to this withdrawal, programs, colleges and universities accredited by ACICS cannot be considered as properly accredited – which is a bench mark for most students to study in those respective colleges/programs.

Overall, ACICS gave accreditation to about 250 colleges, which include about 130 institutions that offer ESL programs. Balance are those that offer higher education (other colleges and universities), that are certified by SEVP, to recruit international students.

According to industry sources, ACICS lost its accreditation recognition because it has accredited some colleges and universities that are considered as ‘visa mills’ and which have conducted their activities fraudulently.

One interesting point to note is that national accrediting bodies such as ACICS are not popular and hence, students & universities alike prefer accredited institutions from Regional accrediting bodies and professional accrediting bodies. Most importantly, getting a transfer from an institution that is accredited to a national body such as ACICS to a regionally accredited institution is not accepted because of quality and standards issues.

There is nothing to worry about, since most Indian students go to Master’s and Bachelor’s level programs that are recognized by accrediting bodies such as ABET, AACSB etc. Since most of the students DO NOT go to ESL programs, there is nothing to worry about withdrawal of recognition for ACICS.

Oh, UK –!

Students from the rest of the world have been flocking to UK universities for decades, eager to get the most out of doing a degree there. But now, things are different.

There have been recent reports that the government is considering cutting international student numbers by nearly half in an effort to meet the immigration targets set by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Students from outside the EU have already begun to turn away from the UK and consider more welcoming countries with renowned universities, such as the US. And that’s because of strict visa rules introduced when May was Home Secretary.

The main reason for these dwindling figures is the legislation introduced in 2012 that tightened the rules on foreign students staying on once they had completed their degrees.

Though our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged May to open up British universities to more of the country’s students and liberalize the visa system, students are now facing strict conditions.

For non-EU students such as those from India, the rules on moving from a student visa to a work visa are pretty strict. Essentially one must have a graduate job, with a graduate salary, with a licensed Home Office employer. These criteria are hard to meet. For example, the graduate salary needs to be a minimum of £20,800, which for a first job is pretty difficult, especially outside of London.

Currently, non-EU students can work part time for 20 hours a week and full time in vacations. If they go to a private college, they’re not allowed to work at all. This was one of the measures introduced last year in a Home Office “crackdown on visa fraud”, targeting students at “bogus” private colleges.

Unless students go to the UK as a single student and get a job during your time there, you would be   counted you as an immigrant. And many students are worried about studying in the UK, because of the prospect of not getting jobs before the deadlines and the state of UK economy.

Want to fly to USA? –

Many of our students are on their way to USA after successfully getting the F1 visa to study in USA. Though many of them joined excellent universities, some of them could get into average ones, because of their profile and scores. Even such students got visas, because of the careful preparation and training provided by Manhattan Review (MR). We provide an exclusive Visa Counseling Service for students who got their admission from US universities – even if they did not go through us. You must be knowing about a few friends or relatives who are desperate to get best-in-class visa counseling and guidance. For that matter, even you may be looking for such a help. Why don’t you make a difference to their and your life? Come/Introduce them, to Manhattan Review(MR) and see how yours and their lives change! And, see how grateful each of you would be because of your (self) help with connecting to us.  Want to do good? Just ask those who need the right service to get in touch with any of our centers throughout India.

US Visas – change in photo requirements!

usa_visitor_visa

Effective 1st November, applicants for any category of visa to USA will not be allowed to wear spectacles, unless they have to wear it for medical conditions.

However, The US Passports and International Travel, US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs, has clarified about a small exemption. “If any applicant insists on wearing eye glasses for medical reasons, he has to obtain a signed statement from a medical professional or health practitioner”, the rule says.

Many Indians (both students and others) were rejected visa last year due to poor quality of glasses and other technical reasons. Worldwide, more than two lakh people submitted poor quality photos which could not be accepted due to poor quality of glasses.

“We had to put their passport applications on hold because we couldn’t clearly identify them from their photo. We can see you more clearly now and you will experience fewer US passport and US visa application delays and can move faster through US ports of entry,“ the announcement adds.

So, students beware! When you go for a photograph for US visa purpose, please get it without your spectacles. Avoid last minute hassles.

UK – not OK!

Under the new visa rules announced by the UK Home Office, anyone applying after November 24 2016 under the Tier 2 intra-company transfer (ICT) category would be required to meet a higher salary threshold requirement of 30,000 pounds from the earlier limit of 20,800 pounds.

Indian IT workers accounted for nearly 90 per cent of visas issued under this route. “The first of two phases of changes to Tier 2, announced by the government in March following a review by the Independent Migration Advisory Committee, will affect applications made on or after November 24 unless stated otherwise,” a UK Home Office statement said.

You might be wondering as to why you should be concerned about this news, since you are a student. Well, when you see the trend of UK government placing restrictions on the student visas first and then on employees later, the pattern seems to be clear – they don’t want to encourage students or employees to come and study or live in UK. Also, with ‘Brexit’ (see our Newsletter dated 4th July 2016), things are looking gloomy for students. Are you OK with this?

Great Opportunity:

Here’s some wonderful news for not so ‘bright’ students who have lesser test scores and percentages. Manhattan Review has customized a new package that will help such students to still study in USA – the land of unlimited opportunities. And, the best part is the cost advantage.
