Work opportunities in USA
Category : MS ACS
This is a ‘special’ Newsletter, especially and exclusively on work visas (H1B) in USA.
After going through all the news items on what USA could ‘do’ for students during and after their education, we thought it right to give you an unbiased update about employment opportunities with a H1B visa (work visa) after education.
As you all know, every year there are about 85,000 visas for H1B workers from other countries. Out of this, 65,000 are for those in the General pool and the balance 20,000 are earmarked (rather, computer-marked) under ‘advanced’ category, for those who study in USA. Since there are more applicants than the available visas in both these categories, there is a “pick up” system based on a lottery. If someone’s name is picked up, he would get the H1B visa. That is how it has been working till now.
Now, the new Government plans to offer (grant) the H1B visas based on merit alone. Trump administration is looking to change this. The idea is that in the event when the number of applications exceeds the number of available slots, applications will be prioritized based on the applicant’s profile. Currently, two main criteria are being considered: whether an applicant has U.S. educational degree and what salary s/he is going to be paid. Trump’s administration is hoping that this will help keep the best and the brightest in the country and send everyone else home.
In other words, those who have the best possible education and are brightest will have the opportunity to get a work visa than based on chance. Full details are yet to be worked out. But it is hoped that by the time the next season starts on 1st April, the rules will be clearer and more definitive.
In the meantime, don’t fret over whether USA is right for you or not. Irrespective of anything and everything, BEST possible education is available in USA and employment opportunities are available both part-time and full-time during and after your education. And, for those with an American degree, opportunities are much wider throughout the world.
Fall deadlines are very close. If you delay applying with a lot of contemplation about new rules, you will miss the flight for this semester. For your own sake and to get the brightest education and experience, come and start your process at Manhattan Review without delay.
As always, we will be with you all the way.
