Education loans Vs. Demonetization

education-loans-vs-demonetization

Visas and more visas As always, Manhattan Review’s students have got student (F-1) visa to USA in good numbers. And some of them have left for USA in the last two weeks. MR is extremely pleased to assist them with their selection of universities, application process, admission and the visa. We did not stop there for our valuable students. We conducted a Pre-Departure Orientation session (PDO) for some of our successful students who got their visas. Not only a lot of useful information was given, but also a very useful and practical gift from Manhattan Review – which will help them stay with their loved ones in India and of course, the US.

Education loans Vs. Demonetization – Some of the aspirants to USA and other countries who got admission were doing their visa documentation but are facing an unexpected problem. Most of the banks are not in a position to grant them educational loans to study abroad. Even if the loans are granted, the necessary paper work is getting delayed due to demonetization and it’s after effects. Some students could not get the ‘sanction letters’ on hand due to which they could not establish financial credibility with the US consulate and here were denied visa. This is an unfortunate situation on which there is no control for many.

Thankfully, there are companies like Avanse (www.avanse.com) and Credila (www.credila.com) which provide educational loans to students for their study abroad. The process is fast and the paper work is smooth and quick.  Manhattan Review will be pleased to assist students with their loan processing, in association with Avanse and Credila. What more, you will get discounted pricing (in the form of reduced interest rates) if you avail the loan service through Manhattan Review. Talk with our counselors and they will be pleased to provide more details of this service.

2017 – New Year is just a few days away. With plenty of good (and some bad too!) memories and a lot of hard work in 2016, you have come to a defining stage in your life with bigger academic goals and aspirations to study the best possible courses in the greatest countries of the world. Cheer up Students, US is always the best!

There is a question mark in the minds of Indian students (and their parents) about studying in the USA, in light of two very important developments — one each in USA and India — Election of Donald Trump and Demonetization in India. During his election campaigns and rallies, Donald Trump was vocal about protecting the interests of American people – especially the working class. He talked about restricting illegal immigrants, constructing a wall on the Mexican border, putting a cap on H1b visas, pausing the issue of Green Cards etc. Yet, after the elections and his victory, one thing has become clear – his keenness to safeguard the American interests. “It is on this point that Indian students should breathe easy and go ahead with their plans”, says Nishin Ninkhaj, Director for Academics of Manhattan Review India.

If  he is keen on safe-guarding the American interests, that’s really good news for us. Illegal immigrants will be stopped from being offered with permanent residence through Green Cards. This will in turn help genuine students who study in USA and apply for H1b visas (which are a step before the Green Card). And, Trump also wants salaries to be increased to ‘Foreign Workers’. “Given the unrest in parts of European Union and the bleak chances for employment after education there, the scope is always wider for USA. The quality, breadth and scope for education and employment is second to none in USA.

No other country has so many opportunities for part-time jobs while studying, internships, employment and development that USA offers. And Trump does not want a 33-billion dollar activity getting adversely affected. Because, when about 10 lakh international students spend close to 33-billion dollars every year on their economy with generating close to 4.0 lakh jobs in USA, I don’t think any leader or Government will deliberately kill the ‘golden goose’ especially when Mr. Trump himself owned Trump University earlier”, says Mr. Nishin. “Practically speaking, the US Government has to spend 800 billion dollars as implementation of reforms costs in the next 20 years as per a recent report of Bipartisan Policy Center. Given that he is an astute businessman, I don’t think he would affect the US economy with this type of expenditure. He would also try to increase the revenues for his country. What better way than to increase legal methods – such as education and employment? asks Mr. Nishin.

“Let’s not forget that our very own “Nikki” Haley has been appointed as Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) by Trump. A very positive step and a great honour that reflects his respect for Indians. I don’t think he would affect his relationship with India and Indians by bringing in any legislation to upset their education and employment opportunities” avers Mr. Nishin.

“Demonetization in India is temporarily holding the financial ability of parents to take care of their children’s education plans. This is a temporary phase, which should ease in a month or so. After that, things will be much better and brighter. With a lot of funds in their banks, these institutions will be very eager to lend money for education loans to students. Students will need the loans around July or August, just before they go for the US visa. By that time, financial matters will stabilize and it will be another great opportunity for students to use the banking resources for their education abroad”, opines Mr. Nishin.

These are precisely the reasons why, our Indian students should more seriously consider studying in USA NOW, than in any other country. Mr. Nishin advises students not to fall prey to false claims of dangers in going to USA. “USA is and will always be a ‘shining beacon’ for best-possible education with employment and other opportunities”.

Student Visas to UK drastically affected

untitled-design-24

Visas to students from outside European Union will be slashed by around 50% – from 3 lakhs to 1.7 lakhs per year. According to ‘The Guardian’, the number of students going to UK have gone down drastically because of various factors such as ‘Brexit’, ‘immigration restrictions’ etc. Because of this, quite a big number of students from countries throughout the World, including India are avoiding to study in the UK.

Not only are many students avoiding UK for education, but also the British Government is deliberately restricting the issue of visas to non-EU students, which adversely affects Indian aspirants. If this is the case, it is better for UK aspirants to look elsewhere for quality education and countries with brighter visa chances.

In the same vein, Cambridge University is anticipating a two-thirds reduction in admissions of students from EU countries. The university anticipates a fall in numbers – even before any change in fee levels and is already seeing signs of a reduction in numbers of EU undergraduate applicants. Cambridge University admissions data reveals a 14.1% drop in EU applications for admission in 2017.

Altogether, this sounds like difficult times for UK and for those students who wish to study in the UK.

Why should you do a PhD? –

For many students, acquiring a doctorate degree is the absolute pinnacle of academic achievement; the culmination of years of commitment to higher education, giving them the right to call themselves “Doctor”. These are perfectly good reasons to do a PhD.

However, the act of pursuing a PhD can be a complex, frustrating, expensive and time-consuming exercise. But with the right PhD preparation, some sound advice, and a thorough understanding of the task at hand, your years as a doctoral student can be some of the most rewarding of your life.

There are many reasons why students choose to work towards a doctorate. Many academic positions, such as university lecturers or researchers, are reserved for people with a PhD. What’s more, many people obtain a PhD as part of a partnership with an employer, particularly in scientific fields such as engineering, where their research can prove useful for some companies.

In some cases, however, PhDs are simply an expression of an individual’s commitment to and love of a subject, and their desire to leave their own mark on the academic world. A PhD takes about three years (sometimes more) when pursued full-time (and about twice that time if studied part-time) and requires students, often referred to as “candidates”, to produce their own work and research on a new area or topic to a high academic standard.

PhD requirements vary significantly between countries and institutions. The PhD once completed grants the successful candidate the title of “doctor of philosophy”, also called PhD or DPhil.

To do a PhD in USA, you need not have a Master’s level qualification. In fact, some universities do admit students directly into their PhD program after their Bachelor’s degree itself.  Such universities might award a terminal Master’s degree after completion of certain number of credits and award the PhD degree after completion of balance requirements.

Admission requirements vary greatly from one university to another and from one program to another. And, the process of admission is longer than for Master’s. Remember to apply very well in advance, since universities admit only once in a year for Fall intake and have application deadlines by end December (mostly).

Manhattan Review (MR) helps quite a few scholars to go for their PhD program in US universities. And, we can identify universities that have deadlines later than December also, if you are very keen to obtain a Doctoral degree. Interested? Send a mail to msacs@indiamr.com and we will get back to you very soon!

At MR, we sincerely hope and pray that the damage to Chennai and Tamilnadu as well as Andhra Pradesh states record minimum loss of lives and limited damage due to the devastating cyclone ‘Vardah’, presently pounding these places.

Education for Employment

education-for-employment

In a recent survey world-wide, students have unequivocally pointed their preference for ‘employability’ as a major factor for their higher education.

Students consider the chance for new career opportunities or for advancement in their current career path – as their primary motivation for study abroad.

Additionally, ‘soft skills’ such as Communication skills, adaptability and Networking opportunities between their alma mater and employers are some of the other factors that student increasingly look forward to get benefitted, because of their higher education abroad.

Eden Woon, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s vice-president for institutional advancement, offers an interesting insight on the relationship between university study and employability: “We are very firm in the belief that the university is not a vocational training institute. So the purpose of the university is not just to prepare you for jobs. The purpose of the university is really to give students a skill so that they can go and find a job but, more importantly, it is really to prepare students for what happens after they get a job. In other words, whether they can adapt to the job and adapt to changes that the world requires of them. That is where innovation, creativity and attitude come in.”

Which are the top universities in the world that have excellent employability rankings? Here they are:
1. Stanford University United States

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)United States

3. Tsinghua Universitychina

4. University of SydneyAustralia

5. University of CambridgeUnited Kingdom

6. Ecole Polytechnique ParisTechFrance

7. Columbia UniversityUnited States

8. University of OxfordUnited Kingdom

9. University of California, Berkeley(UCB)United States

10. Princeton UniversityUnited States

You will notice that FIVE out of 10 universities are in USA. When are you planning to join any one of them?

Funding sources for study abroad –

Many students want to study abroad not only for the sake of employment but also with the intention of standing on their own legs, i.e. by looking to fund education on their own. What are the opportunities available to be self-sufficient to study abroad?

One attractive source of funding is ‘Scholarships’ given by universities and various trusts for meritorious students. Scholarships are a ‘grant’ that does not come with any restrictions about working or commitment. If a student has excellent academic background, top-of-the-line test scores and admission, a scholarship could be granted as a fixed sum, covering the cost of education, living and other requirements. Of course, there could be smaller scholarships too. As the name implies, scholarship is meant to honour the scholar for his achievements and to encourage him/her to do better and contribute his mite to the society.

Assistantships are another source of funding for international students. These could be in the form of Teaching, Research or Administrative. Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants are selected by Professors in order to assist them with their respective requirements. Teaching Assistants are expected to grade the Answer sheets, teach undergrad students and help with laboratory and class-room related tasks.  Research Assistants help the professor to continue and expand his research and generally help with whatever is assigned by the guide/Professor. Administrative Assistants work in the department in various roles, such as a Web Master, Clerk, Content developer etc. All these assistantships are usually paid in many forms. Some are given a complete remission from tuition payment plus a stipend to cover their living costs. Some are given a partial tuition waiver.

Finally, ‘tuition waivers’ are offered directly to some international students based on their overall application strength. Some are offered 90% waiver, some 75% and some more 50% etc. For example, University of Cincinnati offered 90% tuition waiver to their successful and meritorious CS department students at the Master’s level. Some universities also offer a fixed sum of ‘x’ dollars per semester and will extend the offer if the student maintains a consistent performance every semester.

Be careful of a trick however, that some universities throw a ‘bait’ of a small tuition waiver to almost all successful applicants, in order to ‘grab’ their dollars. These universities want international students to join them, so they could get tuition payment which is three times more than the domestic students. The more number of ‘international students’, the merrier for them! So, don’t fall prey to offers of funding irrespective of academic merit. In case of doubt, contact Manhattan Review (MR) about such universities and offers. We will be pleased to help you choose the right university to study abroad.

Grab the ‘festive’ offer –

MR has launched a great package to students who have average academics, low scores and many backlogs/repeats. We offer you unparalleled package, with which you can get into US universities that are perfect for their profile and requirements.  Most importantly, students get this at a very low cost than our regular packages. What is stopping you from grabbing this offer during the ‘Festival of Joy and Peace – Christmas’ time? Talk to our counselors who will be too happy to give you more details and make a very big change in your academic life & destiny.

On a parting note –

Our hearty condolences to the people of Tamil Nadu and all the admirers of Ms. J. Jayalalitha, who passed away after reigning over the State like a Colossus. It’s not easy to find another LEADER like her.

Wish you all a fantastic future!
