Education Trumped in USA?

Education Trumped? –

l

One of the most discussed topics among our student community – especially those looking towards US – is the effect of education getting ‘trampled’ under the incoming Presidency of Trump.

How untrue! Are we not counting the birds before they are hatched?

The US Government makes 32 billion dollars per year from international students who study in USA. Nothing will displease the new Government or its President if this comes down. It is a fact that the policies as laid out by Trump are mostly towards illegal immigrants and curbing excessive issue of work visas for foreign nationals. With the waves of ‘nationalism’ sweeping world-wide, it is imperative that Trump has to consider supporting the domestic work force and accept the alternatives next.

It is also equally imperative that ‘skilled’ work force – especially in the IT field – is hard to get just like that! Even if you get some, the work force (domestic) is so pricey!! Countries like India, with its knowledgeable, competitive and highly cost-effective work force is the most attractive catch for any country, looking to cut costs and save pennies. So, if you restrict employment opportunities for international labor (aka work force), the ever-so-sensitive Indians will not consider studying in the USA, which is their penultimate step to become a part of the American dream. With India sending the second highest number of students to USA after China, it is difficult to ignore the dangers of restricting international students from studying and subsequent employment.

‘No education’ step will lead to ‘no employment’, which will ultimately lead to so many complications for the US economy. There is no way any reasonable bureaucrat or politician will affect their own country by their own actions.  In other words, as long as Indian students study hard and work harder for a cost-effective pay, they will always be in demand. And they cannot be ‘trumped’.

Don’t you agree?

If you do, start packing your bags and prepare to fly to USA for better education and brighter career, with Manhattan Review helping you all the way!

Online education USA, anyone? –

Quite frequently, we receive enquiries if international students could do online courses while they are within the USA.

As you know, online courses are those programs which the students could complete without attending college and in fact, without their presence in the city or country where the college is offering. This is becoming one of the popular forms of learning for many students across the world because of several reasons – convenience, flexibility, lower costs, better education and comfort of learning from their homes.

Most of the institutions around the world (colleges and universities) are offering online courses for students world-wide. In other words, education has become an entity without borders – whoever it may be – irrespective of age, experience and previous education – can take up a course, complete it and obtain a diploma or degree with ease and convenience.

So, what is stopping you from taking up online education in USA, when you are within USA? The rules governing a student visa (F1 Visa) are quite simple and straight-forward. If you want to study in USA, get a visa for full-time education. Since online education is literally part-time, students cannot meet the visa conditions and therefore, cannot do online courses when studying in USA full-time.

What are the rules governing full-time education in USA? If a student enrolls for 9 credit hours per semester at the Master’s level and 12 credit hours per semester at the Bachelor’s level, he is considered to be ‘in-status’ – a legal, full-time international student. Any one doing less than those prescribed here will be treated as “out of status”, which will bar them from staying back in USA to study on F1 visa.  So, literally, international students can only study full-time in US universities and cannot do online (part-time) courses.

Is there no option to do some course of interest, online? Yes, that is possible. Students can do ONE course per semester part-time or online. This course can be used towards completion of the program (Bachelor’s or Master’s) or to gain knowledge in an unrelated field.

It might be tempting to think that since the online courses are offered part-time, they might be cheaper and cost effective. Unfortunately, NO. The cost of online courses are as costly as class-room courses in most of the US universities.  This is why, though there is an option to do at least one course, international students especially from India, do not prefer to study online.

One strong reason is the fact that Indian students are hard-working. They want to immerse in the class room experience and gain full advantage from such learning, training, and networking opportunities. What can they benefit by staying back in their accommodations and learning one or more courses online? According to a majority of students, Nothing! So, full-time education within the classrooms is the most popular form of learning for our students from India.

When are you joining them in USA?

Have a great December.

Canada – Oh, la..la…:

canada

The Canadian government has announced some much-anticipated changes to its immigrant-selection system, with the goal of boosting the prospects of international students and highly skilled workers who wish to become permanent residents.

The changes to Canada’s Express Entry program will come into effect on 19 November 2016.

Under the program, international students who have graduated from a Canadian institution are placed in a pool with other groups of skilled workers and prospective immigrants. Immigration,

The net effect of the Express Entry program has been to place international students within a larger pool of skilled workers who are all competing for a chance to apply for permanent residency. International graduates of Canadian post-secondary institutions will be awarded 15 points for completion of a one-year or two-year program, and 30 points for completion of degree studies at the undergraduate or postgraduate levels

The program will award significantly less points for a qualified job offer: rather than the 600 points currently awarded, candidates will, as of 19 November, receive a maximum of 200 points for offers for senior management positions; all other job offers will earn 50 points.

With these changes, more former international students will be able to transition to permanent residence using the Express Entry system. Former international students are a key source of candidates in Express Entry because of their age, education, skills, and experience.

The net result of the new scoring system is that it will place international graduates on a much stronger footing within the Express Entry candidate pool by both greatly reducing the importance of a qualified job offer while also increasing the points awarded for study in Canada.

The group that would benefit the most from these changes is the international students, who have studied in Canada and have the language and skill sets to become assets for the Canadian economy.

What are you waiting for? Canada is beckoning you and Manhattan Review is ready to help you study in Canada for Fall 2017 intake. Take the leap of faith and land on the shores of Canada, permanently.

Financial Aid – some facts:

Many students come to us looking for financial aid in the universities they plan to study. While we welcome and encourage them, there are a few points applicants need to keep in mind, before they strongly desire funding/aid from universities abroad.

  • Financial aid is always awarded based on merit of applicants and not on need.
  • Funding will be awarded to those applicants who are typically in the top 2-3% of all meritorious applicants.
  • The profile of applicants is very widely distributed throughout the world and hence, the competition is very high!
  • Deadlines for most universities/departments are at least 8-12 months before the start of semester. If one is looking for funding for Fall 2017, deadlines for funding are between October to December of 2016 itself.
  • Graduate School deadlines are different from the departmental deadlines.
  • There may or may not be separate application for financial aid.
  • Applications must be complete in all respects and received by the universities – including test scores reporting, recommendations and other application documents to reach by the deadline – without exception. It is NOT possible to apply first and send the documents after deadline.
  • Score reports (TOEFL, GRE etc.) have to be sent directly by the testing agency (ETS) and copies/online reports are not accepted.
  • Finally, aid is considered on several factors like application timing, diversity of applicant, overall profile and several other factors apart from the regular requirements.

It is in your best interest to apply as early as possible – preferably well before deadlines – in order to succeed in getting financial aid/scholarship/funding from good US & Canadian universities. Wish you all the best.

USA opens its doors to international students…

USA opens its doors to international students...

usa-opens-its-doors-to-international-students

A total of 1,65,918 students from India went to the US in 2015-16, which is 15.9% of all international students. The numbers have increased by more than 24.9% over the previous year. This is the highest growth among all the countries sending students to USA.

China has sent 3,28,547 students, which represents an increase of only 8.1% over 2014-15.  Saudi Arabia is the third nation which has sent 61,287 students to USA.

Overall, a total of 10,43,839 students have joined US universities and colleges in 2015-16, which represents an increase of 7.1% over the previous year.

Among Universities, New York University has attracted the highest number of international students (15,000+), followed by University of Southern California (13,000+) and (surprisingly) Arizona State University (ASU) (12,000+) students. Among the top 3, ASU has come in the list for the first time, reflecting the popularity the university has gained over the years.

California, New York and Texas are the three top states that attracted international students.

20.8% of the students opted for Engineering, followed by 19.2% for Management courses. Maths & Computer Science attracted 13.6% of the students.

More than 2/3rd of the students depended on their own (sponsored) funding, while only 17% were given funding by American universities.

Finally, as always, Graduate level education (Masters and beyond) is most popular, followed by the Bachelor’s level. There is a decline in the number of students going for secondary level education below the Bachelor’s level.

The ‘Trump’ Card:

No doubt, the US election results are a big surprise the world over. There have been several reports about the Trump effect over non-US citizens, immigrants and others. Over a period of time and based on the reports of various news agencies, a few things stand-out, about Trump’s approach towards the world and especially the student world.

  • Genuine immigrants will not be affected
  • Only those who illegally entered USA will be ‘trumpeted’
  • Since international students contribute more than 30 billion dollars to the US economy every year, the country cannot afford to lose this revenue
  • As the international student diaspora contribute immensely to the working class at a higher level (Software, hardware and other fields that required highly talented and trained skills), it is neither practical nor possible to alienate such contributors to their economy.

Therefore, students who want to study in the US and later plan for a career there genuinely should never be afraid of Donald Trump or any new policies that US might bring in. It is in their own interest that international students should be welcomed with open arms.

Fall for Fall 2017:

If you have not been bowled over (or fallen) by Fall 2017’s attraction to join American universities, it is time to fall head over heels!

Fall 2017 deadlines are close, for applying. Any further delay will affect good students’ chances for financial aid and admission in very good universities.  Since Fall is the semester during which maximum amount of funding will be available for international (and domestic as well) students, it is important to apply IMMEDIATELY, without any further delay. For many universities, the deadlines are just a month away – end December. It is in your best interests to apply for funding/aid as early as possible.

Many students have an impression that they could apply by the deadline date and still expect some ‘miracle’ will help them get aid. Please note that while the prescribed deadline is the last date to apply, US universities encourage students to apply “well before” the deadlines, in order for them to process the applications carefully and favorably.

So, what are you waiting for? Visit our centers across India and start your application process with US universities TODAY! Manhattan Review will be with you throughout the whole process right from the selection of program, universities till you reach USA. Help your friends by informing them about the impending deadlines and walk-in together to help yourself and your friends. After all, if we don’t do good to others, we’ll become fat J

On a parting note:

While Donald Trump has shocked the world, our PM Modi has ‘surgically struck’ the black economy in India with devastating effect. There is no doubt about the long-term benefit with this action. We advise all our students who wish to pay the balance amounts or who would like to avail any other services to make payments with your Credit or Debit Cards. And, you can also make payment into our bank account directly. No cash, no hassles!

Wish you all less time in the banks and at ATMs!

Things that Trigger the Reptilian Brain: Emotional Bonding

Things that Trigger the Reptilian Brain: Emotional Bonding

9999

  • Development of Emotional Intellect
  • Be Serious in what you decide to do
  • Reduce unnecessary comedy
  • Remove the mental blocks
  • Believe in yourself

All of the above practices are useful and carry forward your passions to desired expectations. They raise your morale to perform better, even in adversity. The first secret that triggers the reptilian brain is being able to understand the curricula or subject of interest. Be non-judgmental: change your attitude to a powerful binding force. Mirror the expressions and emotional behavior of successful persons. Remove time warps. Add positive tone to your preparations. Indulge in pep talks during brainstorming sessions.

Speaking on practical terms, examine your skills in a detailed manner. Look at what works and what doesn’t. Fear creates weakness. Follow your goals. Believe that you are the best. Make progress with strategies that outline successful careers. Take the example of achievers. Embrace new logic. Choose a different direction: learn to take risks. You must support others. Build their confidence.

Crosswalks in London have reminders for pedestrians to “look right”. Try and look left as well. One thing you should know is that what you learn in school is ineffective and incomplete. Competitive advantage is gained from incremental exposition. Knowledge gathered collectively has a broad platform. Basic truth is that everything is linear and transforming. Push your point of view with real engagement. Shared experience create multiple thoughts.

Successful visionaries go very far. Passive aggression underlines negative thinking. Stay away from it. Deep motivation comes from sharing your vision with others. Make a habit of questioning every doubt that arises in the intellect mind. Hiding it will not trigger the reptilian brain. You need to exercise your thought levels. It explores the deeper aspects of the curricula. Knowledge is gained from it and wisdom is enhanced. There is a rapid growth. A healthy display of personal interest and strengths are developed.

US Visas – change in photo requirements!

usa_visitor_visa

Effective 1st November, applicants for any category of visa to USA will not be allowed to wear spectacles, unless they have to wear it for medical conditions.

However, The US Passports and International Travel, US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs, has clarified about a small exemption. “If any applicant insists on wearing eye glasses for medical reasons, he has to obtain a signed statement from a medical professional or health practitioner”, the rule says.

Many Indians (both students and others) were rejected visa last year due to poor quality of glasses and other technical reasons. Worldwide, more than two lakh people submitted poor quality photos which could not be accepted due to poor quality of glasses.

“We had to put their passport applications on hold because we couldn’t clearly identify them from their photo. We can see you more clearly now and you will experience fewer US passport and US visa application delays and can move faster through US ports of entry,“ the announcement adds.

So, students beware! When you go for a photograph for US visa purpose, please get it without your spectacles. Avoid last minute hassles.

UK – not OK!

Under the new visa rules announced by the UK Home Office, anyone applying after November 24 2016 under the Tier 2 intra-company transfer (ICT) category would be required to meet a higher salary threshold requirement of 30,000 pounds from the earlier limit of 20,800 pounds.

Indian IT workers accounted for nearly 90 per cent of visas issued under this route. “The first of two phases of changes to Tier 2, announced by the government in March following a review by the Independent Migration Advisory Committee, will affect applications made on or after November 24 unless stated otherwise,” a UK Home Office statement said.

You might be wondering as to why you should be concerned about this news, since you are a student. Well, when you see the trend of UK government placing restrictions on the student visas first and then on employees later, the pattern seems to be clear – they don’t want to encourage students or employees to come and study or live in UK. Also, with ‘Brexit’ (see our Newsletter dated 4th July 2016), things are looking gloomy for students. Are you OK with this?

Great Opportunity:

Here’s some wonderful news for not so ‘bright’ students who have lesser test scores and percentages. Manhattan Review has customized a new package that will help such students to still study in USA – the land of unlimited opportunities. And, the best part is the cost advantage. It does not cost much to take up our service and take-off. For those who are looking to fly soon to USA to study, this is the time to start on the ‘marker’ and be a WINNER soon.
